Incorporating nineteen 17th/18th century Florentine pietra dura panels around a Louis XIV ebony panel depicting Mercury handing the infant Bacchus to the Nymphs of Nysa, the panel forming a door. With a brocatello marble top.
This cabinet can be confidently attributed to Robert Hume & Son (1808-1845). Hume made something of a speciality in creating sumptuous ormolu-mounted ebony cabinets incorporating earlier pietra dura panels. His clientele of antiquarian connoisseurs included George IV, William Beckford of Fonthill and George Watson-Taylor of Erlestoke Park. Notably similar ebony spiral columns with ormolu capitals can be found on the stand of a pietra dura cabinet attributed to Hume sold Christies, Exceptional Sale, 7th July 2022, Lot 24 and on a centre table attributed to Hume, sold Christies, Philip Hewat-Jaboor: an Eye for the Magnificent, 8th February 2024, lot 48.
