A COMPANION OF ULYSSES, AFTER THE ANTIQUE BUST IN THE TOWNLEY COLLECTION, NOW IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, LATE 18TH CENTURY.
Statuary Marble.
Statuary Marble.
This bust is a late 18th century English copy after the antique bust excavated from Hadrian’s Villa in 1769 and acquired by the great collector Charles Townley in 1772. The antique bust appears in Zoffany’s 1782 painting ‘Charles Townley in his Sculpture Gallery’. On Townley’s death in 1805 his collection, including ‘Companion of Ulysses’ was acquired by the British museum.
