AN EXCEPTIONAL EARLY NEO-CLASSICAL STATUARY MARBLE CHIMNEYPIECE, CIRCA 1760.


With moulded breakfront shelf (replaced), the tablet carved with a recumbent lion, on simple scrolled jambs.


There are two chimneypieces of this very distinctive, spare and elegant neoclassical design at Foremark Hall in Derbyshire, which were probably supplied in 1761by the sculptor Richard Hayward. Foremark was commissioned by Sir Robert Burdett for his son Francis and built between 1759-61. It was designed by the leading provincial architect, David Hiorns of Warwick.
