Pair of George II Mahogany Side Tables

An important pair of George II mahogany side tables, circa 1735.

Almost certainly commissioned by Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart (1708-1770) for Ham House, Surrey, and possibly made by William Bradshaw (1700-1775). Original verd antique marble tops. The two carved swags on the side of each table replaced.

Provenance:
Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart, Ham House, Surrey;
Thence by descent at Ham until displaced circa 1885 by the large radiator cabinets at either end of the Round Gallery;
Private Collection, USA.

Literature:
Ham House 1844 Inventory, Round Gallery: a pair of handsome carved mahogany framed pier tables with verd antique marble tops.

There are three almost identical side tables at Ham House, all with their original verd antique marble tops, a pair in the Great Hall and a single one at the foot of the Great Staircase. The present pair (as suggested by Christopher Rowell, the National Trust’s furniture curator) are almost certainly those in the Round Gallery in the 1844 inventory, described as a pair of handsome carved mahogany framed pier tables with verd antique marble tops. See C. Rowell et al, Ham House, 400 years of Collecting and Patronage, Yale 2013, p.472. The tables remaining at Ham are illustrated Rowell (op.cit.), the single table fig. 279 and the pair fig. 60. There are no bills remaining for any of these tables but, of the makers known to have been supplying furniture for Ham during the 1730’s, much the most likely author of the tables is William Bradshaw (1700-1775). Of the makers working at Ham only Bradshaw is known to have produced such boldly baroque pieces as these tables. He supplied (along with John Boson and William Hallett) to the 1st Earl of Radnor for Lonsdale Castle and to the 1st Earl of Leicester for Holkham. Bradshaw also worked at Chevening for the 2nd Earl Stanhope and there is a similarly bold table (in giltwood) in the hall there which is generally attributed to him.
