Pietra Dura and Ebony Cabinet

An exceptional Pietra Dura and ebony cabinet, mid 17th century, the japanned stand attributed to William & John Linnell, circa 1752-55.

The cabinet with pietra paesina panelled drawers around a door flanked by verde antico pilasters and enclosing a burr-walnut interior, above three deep drawers inset with large pietra dura panels of an elephant, a camel, and a mouflon. The stand decorated with gilt floral sprays on an ebonised ground.

The cabinet probably acquired by Henry Somerset-Scudamore, 3rd Duke of Beaufort (1707-1745)
The stand commissioned by Charles Noel Somerset, 4th Duke of Beaufort (1709-1756)
Given by his wife, Elizabeth, Duchess of Beaufort (c1713-1799) to her steward John Capper (1717-1796) of Berkeley Square, London
thence by descent to his niece Katherine Backhouse, née Capper, (1792-1882)
